Theresia Zhang
Theresia Zhang (b. 2000, Beijing) is a painter and illustrator based in New York City. After receiving her BFA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2023, she is currently pursuing an MFA in Painting at the New York Academy of Art.
Zhang's color drenched works are charged with emotion and adorned with motifs of flowers, pearls, and metal, imbuing her paintings with a jewel-like quality. She describes this aesthetic as “Reversed Chinoiserie”, a personal motto that playfully fetishizes Western historical beauty through a contemporary cross-cultural lens.
Narrative and vintage aesthetics play a central role in her imagery. Dainty characters populate her staged worlds, brought to life through sparkling color palettes, delicate surface treatments, and the expressive handling of oil paint and soft pastel.
Zhang has exhibited in solo and group shows in New York, Shanghai, and Baltimore, receiving many awards, including American Illustration Award, iJungle Illustration award, Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Award, PIE international Illustration Next ILLUST award, and inaugural Art of Racing Championship of Preakness Stakes at Baltimore, Maryland. Her clients include the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Preakness Stakes, and Pimlico Race Course. Zhang’s works have been featured on CBS news and many other magazines and press releases.
